A Sutherland Shire father and son duo have plunged into the icy waters of the Royal National Park, training side-by-side with the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) to ensure their community remains flood-rescue ready.

Earlier, more localised flood warnings will give residents in Ballina and Wardell more time to prepare and make informed decisions before floodwaters arrives, thanks to new flood forecast services along the Richmond River.

Fifty years ago, a 14-year-old Mark Ryan walked into an NSW State Emergency Service (SES) training night after a few friends encouraged him to come along.

Visit NSW SES Corowa Unit at the 2026 Federation Community Expo. Our stall will focus on volunteer recruitment and practical storm preparedness. Speak with local NSW SES members about operational and support volunteering opportunities, training pathways and how to express interest in joining. Community members can also learn practical ways to prepare their homes and families for severe weather, including emergency kits, securing outdoor items, maintaining gutters and understanding when to contact NSW SES. The stall will include approved NSW SES information, visual displays and a simple interactive emergency-kit activity. The Federation Community Expo is free to attend.

The NSW SES Batemans Bay and Moruya Units will be at the Playdates with Emergency Services. Come and meet Paddy Platypus and our friendly volunteers, learn about how to be safer in emergencies and disasters and view our interactive display.

NSW State Emergency Service (SES) members from across the Northern Zone tested their rescue capability, teamwork and leadership skills during the annual Northern Zone Disaster Rescue Challenge held in Maitland over the weekend.
