The Disaster Rescue Challenge (DRC) is a hands-on, scenario-based event where SES teams test their disaster response skills across areas including rescue, land search, navigation, rescue, storm operations, and first aid. Teams are assessed throughout the challenge, with top performers progressing to the State Disaster Rescue Challenge.

When Roger Benson joined the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) in 1975, the Sutherland Unit was run out of a disused fire brigade station and a member’s garage in Engadine. There were no formal buildings or uniforms, just a group of dedicated locals wanting to serve their community.
