The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is urging the community to remain vigilant this Easter long weekend as heavy rain and strong winds are forecast to impact Western NSW.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting a low-pressure system to move across parts of the state from Saturday, bringing moderate rainfall.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan ESM encouraged people travelling to ensure they have the Hazards Near Me app on their smart devices to stay across safety information and warnings.

“During this holiday period particularly, we encourage people not familiar with the area they’re in to download the Hazards Near Me app and set a watch zone for their holiday destination,” Assistant Commissioner Hogan said.

“This will alert you to any storms, floods and other hazards in your dedicated watch area, and advise you what to do to stay safe should a warning be issued.”

Assistant Commissioner Hogan said flash flooding and road closures were possible in the far west of the state, particularly around Packsaddle, Broken Hill and Tibooburra, and urged travellers to remain vigilant.

“People planning on camping in Western NSW this weekend should consider where they’re establishing camp sites, monitor the conditions around them and monitor warnings and advice from emergency services,” Assistant Commissioner Hogan said.

“Flash Flooding may cause road closures, and we’re asking the public to understand their risks and make the safe decision for themselves and their family.”

“It’s also important to prepare your home and outdoor items when a severe weather or storm warnings are issued. You can do this by tying down outdoor furniture and trampolines, picking up loose items and parking your car undercover away from trees.”

For help in floods and storms, call the NSW SES on 132 500. In life threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
