FLOODING CONTINUES AT MENINDEE, WHILE SES WARN OF STORM RISK IN NORTHEAST NSW

05/01/2023 03:10 PM

NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) is continuing to monitor the situation at Menindee Lakes where major flooding has left several properties inundated or isolated due to floodwaters.

The Darling River height at Menindee is steady at 10.25 metres, however, due to water releases upstream. The Bureau of Meteorology are warning that further rises of up to 10.7m (above the 1976 record) are possible by this weekend.

Water levels are expected to remain above the major flood level (9.70metres) at Menindee through to mid-January.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Dean Storey says NSW SES volunteers are working hard on ground assisting the Menindee community with flood operations during this time.

“We have our teams on ground in Menindee assisting with community flood response, including sandbagging, resupply and gathering intelligence,” he said.

“There are currently 12 houses impacted due to floodwaters in low-lying areas of Menindee.

“Many communities across the state have seen renewed flooding and we encourage them to heed advice and warnings from the NSW SES.”

Storm activity is continuing across the state, where severe thunderstorms crossed parts of NSW yesterday.

Assistant Commissioner Storey says more severe thunderstorms are possible across the northern half of the coast and ranges of NSW today and into tonight.

“Storm activity including heavy rainfall, large hail, and damaging winds are forecast for northeast NSW and the Northern Rivers later today,” he said.

“It is important to stay up to date with weather forecasts and warnings for your area and prepare when you can.

“Move your car away from trees, ensure grains and gutters are clear, and secure loose items in your yard.

Prolonged major flooding is still occurring in the state's far west and southwest, along the lower Lachlan, Murrumbidgee, Murray and Darling Rivers.
