HEIGHTENED FLOOD RISK FOR NSW WITH MORE RAIN EXPECTED

26/11/2021 04:03 PM

Communities across NSW are reminded to be aware and prepared for the risk of riverine and flash flooding over the next few days, as more heavy widespread rain is expected.

NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) has already responded to more than 3,000 requests for assistance since the severe weather started earlier this month, with more than 600 coming through in the past 24 hours (Thursday to Friday). Many of these requests have been for storm related damage including leaking and damaged roofs, fallen trees. The service has also responded to 16 flood rescues.

While some of these rescues are for people’s properties being inundated by floodwater, many have been for people attempting to drive through floodwater. NSW SES wants to remind motorists that if you are on the roads, please do not drive through floodwater. By doing so, you are putting your life and the lives of your passengers at risk. In the event you come across floodwater, stop, turn around and find another way.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a number of flood warnings, including a flood watch for potential minor flooding along the Hawkesbury-Nepean river that may be caused by rainfall over the next 24 hours. With saturated catchments, full dams, and some areas already experiencing flooding, there is a high chance communities could experience riverine and flash flooding this weekend (Saturday 27 and Sunday 28 November).

There are a number of things people can do to prepare for a flood, including subscribing to weather alerts, knowing your evacuation routes and having an emergency evacuation kit ready in the event you need to leave your home urgently.
