COMMUNITIES URGED TO BE VIGILANT AHEAD OF WET WEATHER

20/11/2021 12:01 PM

NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) is calling on communities to be prepared ahead of potential severe weather expected to hit parts of the state from tomorrow (Sunday 21 November).

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised, from tomorrow, a widespread weather system is likely to cause thunderstorms across the Blue Mountains and North East of the state, bringing the risk of hail, strong winds and heavy rain.

Flood watches have also been issued by the Bureau for a number of inland rivers, including the Upper Macintyre, Gwydir, Peel, Castlereagh, Belubula, and Macquarie to Bathurst.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan said weather systems like these bring the very real risk of riverine and flash flooding.

“Our catchments are very wet, and our dams are full, so it will not take a lot for floods to occur,” Ms Hogan said.

“We need people to be mindful of their flood risks and be prepared. In the event flooding does occur, there is a very real chance that roads can be impacted.

“If you are on the road and come across floodwater, do not attempt to drive, walk or ride through it. Instead, turn around and find another way,” she said.

Ms Hogan added that the weather system is also likely to bring hail and strong winds.

“Some of our communities, including Coffs Harbour, are still recovering from previous severe weather,” Ms Hogan said.

“It is important you do what you can to protect your homes before the weather hits.

“Moving your car undercover and away from trees and powerlines, clearing gutters and downpipes, and moving or tying down loose items in your backyard can go a long way to helping minimize further damage,” she added.
