Potential thunderstorms may impact areas of NSW

17/12/2020 06:09 PM

With Lismore experiencing heavy rain over the past 24 hours (receiving over 203mm since 9 am yesterday) and renewed rises on rivers across NSW because of unsettled weather conditions, there is the potential for further thunderstorm activity to impact already saturated areas of NSW going into the weekend.

In Lismore, the NSW SES received 136 calls for assistance from heavy rainfall caused by thunderstorm activity. 16 requests for assistance were for flood rescues. These jobs related to parents requiring SES assistance to collect kids from a pre-school, two people caught in a house by rising floodwater, cows surrounded by floodwater at Tuncester Bridge, medical support for isolated residents needing assistance across floodwaters and support for a suspected gas leak to transport responders across floodwater.

There has been over 2,300 requests for assistance across the state since last Thursday.

Throughout the State we are expecting isolated severe thunderstorms over the next few days, with unsettled weather across widespread parts of NSW. The NSW SES will continue to monitor local catchments as flood waters recede and most rivers will peak throughout today. There may be renewed rises on rivers due to heavy rainfall associated with thunderstorms.

With catchments being wet and further heavy rain predicted flash flooding is also possible. We ask the community to remain vigilant and stay up to date with the latest information and warnings through our social media channels Facebook, Twitter and the SES website.

As school holidays have started for some parts of the state, we are asking everyone to take it easy on the roads, plan your trip and allow extra time to get to your destination. Stay up to date on the latest road information visit Live Traffic or MyRoadInfo or call 132 701 or call 132 701 and make safe decisions. Remember, never drive, ride or walk through floodwater – if it’s flooded, forget it.

Remind your children to stay away from fast-flowing creeks and storm drains and that floodwater can contain chemicals, debris, dead animals and even sewerage.

If you need emergency assistance from the NSW SES, please call 132 500.
In a life-threatening emergency, call 000 (triple zero).
