The NSW SES has been announced as the winner of the Resilient Australia Awards in the Government category for its social media campaign Real People, True Stories - If It's Flooded, Forget It. In February 2017, the NSW SES rolled out a social media campaign to highlight the dangers of entering floodwater.
The campaign featured videos that were shared across Facebook, You Tube and Twitter and reached more than 800,000 people, including at least 173,000 young men, who are most at risk of drowning in floodwater. Winning this award recognises the potential and influence that real people have, in sharing their actual experiences and what they have learnt.
The NSW SES would like to thank Sonya, Peter, Jaime and Tom for sharing their experiences to help others make safer decisions and thereby potentially save lives.
On Thursday 19th October, Samantha Karmel and David Webber from the Community Engagement Branch, Assistant Commissioner Scott Hanckel along with Sonya Marks from Casino and Peter and Michael Manuel from Nelsons Plains, who feature in the videos, were presented the award at a ceremony at Parliament House in Sydney. If you have not seen their stories then you can watch them here.
