Motorists were caught out by flash flooding which impacted parts of Sydney this afternoon and evening.

NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Assistant Commissioner Nicole Hogan said volunteers had responded to 304 calls since 2.00 pm across the state.

“We received 272 calls for help in the Sydney metropolitan area for fast rising water which impacted roads and buildings,” she said.

Assistant Commissioner Hogan said the NSW SES undertook 17 flood rescues after motorists became trapped in vehicles.

“All of these rescues occurred in quick succession from around 5.30pm onwards as commuters were on the road in peak hour traffic,” she said.

Flash flooding was reported in several areas, with rescues occurring in Fairfield, Warwick Farm, Milperra, Merrylands, Guildord, Granville and Auburn.

The weather system started to ease in the greater Sydney area around 8.00pm and is slowly moving north to the Central Coast and Hunter areas.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting unsettled weather and storms for much of the week.

Assistant Commissioner Hogan said it is important people remain up to date with the warnings and monitor conditions before driving.

“If you come across a flooded road, the best advice is to turn around and find an alternative route,” she said.

“You should also seek shelter at higher ground if you can.”
