NSW SES advises people to monitor conditions in the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley

Summary

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is advising residents to monitor conditions in the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley, as forecast rain may lead to river level rises.

Media release

The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is advising residents to monitor conditions in the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley, as forecast rain may lead to river level rises.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a flood watch for possible minor flooding in parts of the Hawkesbury Nepean Valley from Friday into Saturday.

NSW SES Hawkesbury Unit Commander Kevin Jones said people need to keep an eye on the conditions over the next 48 hours.

“People should be aware there is some rain on the way, which may lead to some minor river level rises and inundation of low-lying areas,” he said.

Inspector Jones said the SES is well prepared, as are residents and caravan parks managers.

“With minor flooding, there may be some impacts on rural farms and properties,” he said.

“However, the property owners are well aware of their risks and are well prepared as they have dealt with this sort of scenario many times.

“With minor flooding, often farmers are required to shift some equipment and livestock.”

Widespread moderate rainfall is likely  in the upper catchments during Friday afternoon and evening, with localised heavy falls possible.
Rainfall during Saturday morning may extend more broadly across the Hawkesbury
Nepean Valley, with widespread moderate rainfall likely and local heavy falls are
possible.

Catchments likely to be affected include:

  • Upper Nepean River minor flooding
  • Hawkesbury and Lower Nepean Rivers minor flooding
  • Upper Coxs River
  • Colo River minor flooding
  • Macdonald River

Despite the current forecast, conditions can change, and as the situation evolves further warnings may be issued by both the Bureau of Meteorology and NSW SES.
