The NSW State Emergency Service (SES) Wagga Wagga Unit has received a significant boost, with a new inflatable rescue boat officially handed over on Saturday September 7 2024.
Member for Wagga Wagga, Dr Joe McGirr handed over the new boat on behalf of the NSW Government, marking a significant upgrade in the unit’s resources.
“The Wagga Wagga SES unit have time and time again come to the aid of their local community and further afield,” Dr McGirr said.
“As we saw in 2022 the Wagga Wagga SES responded to sustained and significant flooding, providing essential support for local residents.”
The inflatable rescue boats are purpose built motorised vessels designed for flood operations and swift water rescue.
NSW SES acting Assistant Commissioner Allison Flaxman attended the handover ceremony and said the new vessel would ensure the Wagga Wagga SES can provide swift and effective assistance to those who need it most in times of crisis.
“This vessel is ideal for the Murrumbidgee River. It can be launched with two people, used in flood rescue, search and rescue and transportation in diverse and turbulent waterways,” Assistant Commissioner Flaxman said.
Emergency Services Minister, Jihad Dib, said the unit’s ongoing commitment to serving their community and beyond is truly commendable.
“These new resources will greatly enhance their ability to respond effectively to emergencies, to continue keeping our community safe,” Minister Dib said.
Established in 1980, The Wagga Wagga SES Unit has a long history of service and dedication. The unit has been leading emergency response in the region, specialising in Flood Rescue, Storm and Water Damage, Land Search and leading responses to major flooding events.
NSW SES Wagga Wagga Unit Acting Unit Commander, Michael Cummins, said the unit members were excited to receive the new vessel to support their community.
"Our volunteers show remarkable courage and dedication, and these new assets will enable us to provide even better support during critical events,” he said.
The recent investment by the NSW Government, totalling $14.7 million, was made in response to the Independent Flood Inquiry and aims to bolster flood rescue and operational capabilities across the state. This funding has resulted in an additional 157 fleet assets, including 10 High Clearance Vehicles, 40 inflatable rescue boats, 50 Ark Angels, 45 command vehicles, two Heavy Rescue vehicles, two trailers, and eight light rescue vehicles.
