'I joined originally to help my neighbours.'

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role within NSW SES?

I am currently the Planning Officer at Campbelltown Unit. With the release of the Campbelltown Flood Study there is now much work to do to complete the Local Flood Plan and engage with the community about their flood risks.

Why did you join NSW SES? Anything that was deciding factor for you?

I joined originally to help my neighbours but as my experience has grown I know there is much more I now can contribute to the safety of my community.

What is your favourite part about being a member of the NSW State Emergency Service?

Working with the NSW SES team, people from other agencies and engaging with the community to ensure they are prepared.

What are the various skills you have learnt along the way?

During my time I with NSW SES have completed many training courses as well as my Advanced Diploma in Emergency Management.

I have also participated in various roles which include:

  • Unit Controller
  • Deputy Unit Controller
  • Planning Officer
  • Media Officer; and
  • Acting as Liaison Officer during multiply agency incidents.

What advice would you give to others that are thinking to join?

This is an opportunity not to be missed.

Not only will you feel great satisfaction by working in your community but self satisfaction as you develop skills you never imagined you would be able to do.
