Community advice and preparedness

In response to the major flooding in the Mid North Coast and surrounding areas, additional emergency service teams from across the nation have deployed to support the NSW SES.

Some areas continue to be impacted by floodwaters, with some communities isolated due to localised flooding of creeks or tributaries, or damage to transport infrastructure.

For isolated areas, NSW SES continues to support resupply efforts. The main focus of operations has now transitioned to support impacted communities to transition to recovery.

Affected residents can find recovery information on the NSW Government Flood Recovery page.

  • For assistance during floods and storms call the NSW SES on 132 500 or Triple Zero (000) for life threatening emergencies.

Damage assessments and clean up advice
What to do before cleaning up:

NSW SES and partner agencies are assessing damage in areas where floodwaters are receding. These assessments should take place before any clean-up or washout begins. We understand the urgency to start recovery, but early assessments and photos ensure coordinated support and that your community gets the help it needs.

When it is safe to return:
  • Photos: Take clear photos of all damage and damaged items before starting any clean-up.
  • Rubbish: Place damaged items on the footpath for collection.
  • Washout: Once items are out for collection and an assessment has been completed, clean-up teams can begin washing out your property.

If you require assistance in storms or floods, call NSW SES on 132 500. In life threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000).

Household clean-up for after a flood or storm

  • Remember to practice basic hygiene during any clean-up period. Wash hands thoroughly after participating in any flood clean-up activities.
  • Wear suitable protective clothing including boots, gloves and eye protection while cleaning up.

  • Landholders are urged to move livestock, pumps and other assets to higher ground.

  • Never drive, walk, ride through, play or swim in floodwater. If it's flooded, forget it.
Road closures and traffic conditions

Donating to impacted residents
GIVIT has partnered with the NSW Government to manage donations of essential goods and services for people impacted by severe flooding in the NSW Mid North Coast and Hunter regions.

The best way for you to help people and communities recover from this event is to donate through GIVIT here: https://www.givit.org.au/.../giv.../new-south-wales-flooding

We are encouraging communities to use this method at this stage, rather than delivering goods directly to NSW SES Units.

Ready to lend a hand?

During disasters, communities and Government agencies come together to help those affected. These situations can be chaotic, so clear communication and coordination are vital to ensure everyone’s safety and that support reaches those who need it most.

NSW SES is working closely with the MidCoast Community Flood Recovery Group to coordinate teams of community volunteers to support clean-up activities across the area.

To get involved in this flood response, visit NSW SES Volunteer HQ at 14 Arkwright Crescent, Taree between 10am and 4pm each day commencing Monday 26 May. Further locations may open in other affected areas as required – please check back regularly for details.

Community volunteers who are working with the NSW SES will be required to register when attending, you should consider wearing old clothes and shoes that can be thoroughly cleaned or disposed of later if you come into contact with items that have been submerged in floodwaters. All other gloves and PPE will be supplied by NSW SES.

It is important we all work together at this time and work in a coordinated way to avoid duplication.

Community volunteer requirements
  • 18 years and older
  • Capable of undertaking the required tasks which may be physically demanding.
  • Work as part of a small team and have transport to move around within the local community.
Important information about volunteering after the flood
  • You may encounter hazardous situations which have been impacted by the floods. Do not enter any floodwaters and stay away from potential flood hazards such as fallen powerlines or electrical cables.
  • Only enter properties with the permission of the owner.
  • If you become injured, advise your NSW SES team leader immediately.
  • Follow all instructions from emergency services.
Planning to help or coordinate a team to assist

If you're planning to help or coordinate a team to assist, please reach out to our NSW SES team at sponvol@ses.nsw.gov.au

Emergency services are already on the ground and managing the response, so it's important to coordinate with them to avoid confusion or duplication. Here’s how you and your group can help safely and effectively:

  • Let NSW SES know where and how you plan to help.
  • Team up with existing groups or join coordinated efforts already underway.
  • Make safety your top priority—don’t take unnecessary risks.
  • Share what you see—report any important observations to emergency services.
  • Nominate a team leader to stay in contact with emergency services.
  • Track your activities—keep a simple record of what you’ve done and who’s involved.

Always follow the directions of emergency service as they're there to protect your group and the wider community. Some areas may be unsafe or may not need the type of support you're offering at that time.

NSW SES can also connect you with other organisations active in the area.

Before heading out, ensure your team has appropriate gear: enclosed shoes, gloves, eye protection, high-vis clothing, and masks if needed.

Important: Some communities are not yet ready for recovery, and it may still be unsafe to return to certain areas. The NSW SES will support community clean-up efforts when it becomes safe to do so.

Please continue checking with your local NSW SES unit for updates about when and how you can volunteer. They’ll share more detailed information as conditions improve.

Frequently asked questions
  • What type of roles can I undertake? The NSW SES is coordinating the initial clean up after the floods. Community volunteers will help with clean up tasks, which may include relocating damaged items and cleaning out flooded homes.
  • You should advise your team leader if you have any pre-existing injuries that may restrict your volunteer experience.
  • What do I need to bring with me when I volunteer? You should bring personal protective equipment suitable for the role you are undertaking, as well as bottled water, insect repellent and sturdy footwear.
  • Is accommodation available? No. You should reconsider travelling to the area to volunteer as accommodation is limited, and needed for those impacted by the floods.
