It wasn't Santa in the “big red suit” who arrived, but NSW SES mascot Paddy the Platypus and his helpers, bringing gifts, merchandise and smiles to young patients.
Seven members from the NSW SES Menai Unit visited the hospital’s Children’s Ward and Paediatric Emergency Department, with the mission to spread some Christmas joy to children and families spending the holidays in hospital.
NSW SES Menai Unit Deputy Unit Commander Hemant Raval said the visit comes after an exceptionally busy year for the team.
“We’ve been on the frontline of storms and floods in the Sutherland Shire, with our cluster responding to more than 1,400 incidents this year alone,” Mr Raval said.
“And this December, we wanted to turn our attention to a different kind of community service and share a bit of festive spirit.
“Seeing the smiles on the kids’ faces today really reminded us why we do what we do.”
The visit was a welcome surprise for Pippa Frankland, who had spent three nights in hospital and was hoping to return home on Saturday.
“Pippy went downhill mid this week, she had the flu, and it turned into a bit of pneumonia, and her blood levels weren’t great,” Pippa’s mother, Katherine Frankland, said.
“Pippy, her brother, and sister were super excited to see the SES. It was a bright end to our hospital stay.”
NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Colin Malone said SES volunteers are integral parts of their local communities.
“Our volunteers are always ready to help, be it storms, floods, rescues, or searches for missing people,” Assistant Commissioner Malone said.
“They are members of the community they serve, with this visit another example of our volunteers extending their support in their local communities in yet another selfless act.”
