All NSW SES Watch and Act flood warnings issued on Monday were downgraded to Advice level warnings on Tuesday afternoon.
River level rises have been observed on the Tweed and Wilsons rivers, while the Richmond River is expected to reach minor flood levels at Ballina and Coraki later this evening.
Despite improving conditions, a number of roads and causeways remain closed due to floodwater.
People are urged to stay out of floodwater and never drive on closed or flooded roads.
NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Dean Storey said while the immediate threat is easing, conditions remain hazardous.
“Floodwater continues to pose a serious risk on local roads and low-lying areas,” Assistant Commissioner Storey said.
“We’ve seen a number of incidents where people have become trapped in their vehicles. Driving through floodwater is dangerous and can be life-threatening to the driver, passengers and rescuers.
“Never drive, walk or play in floodwater. If it’s flooded, forget it.”
NSW SES crews remain on the ground supporting communities and monitoring river levels and local impacts.
Looking ahead, unsettled weather is forecast for coastal areas, with scattered showers expected to continue over the next 24 hours.
Damaging winds and dangerous surf conditions are also possible along the coastal fringe during the week.
