NORTHERN NSW COMMUNITIES URGED TO AVOID FLOODWATERS AS HEAVY RAINFALL CONTINUES

13/08/2024 03:11 PM

As more heavy rainfall is forecast to fall across the northeast of the state, the NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is urging people to know their risk and avoid driving through floodwater.

With several roads already inundated by flash flooding in some areas, NSW SES crews are prepared to respond to any calls for assistance but is asking the community to not take any risks and be prepared.

The Bureau of Meteorology is predicting another 100 millimetres of widespread heavy rainfall from Tuesday evening into Wednesday between the Tweed Coast and Coffs Harbour, including the Northern Rivers.

This rainfall will lead to an increased risk of flash flooding and riverine rises, with flood warnings current for Tweed, Brunswick, Richmond, Wilsons, Orara and Bellinger Rivers.

Acting North Eastern Zone Commander, Chief Superintendent Kristine McDonald, said teams were well-prepared for flood rescue operations in areas anticipated to receive heavy rainfall.

“We're closely monitoring the weather and are prepared to respond swiftly to any emergencies that may arise,” A\ Chief Superintendent McDonald said.

“With catchments already wet and soil moisture high from rainfall earlier this week, several roads are already inundated by floodwaters so people should avoid unnecessary travel in the rain.

“Flash flooding can occur rapidly and without warning, posing a risk to life and property, and we are reminding people to never drive, walk or play in floodwaters.”

A 24-hour incident management team has been stood up in Lismore to coordinate the response to calls for assistance throughout the weather event, and flood rescue teams and assets have been prepositioned ahead of the bad weather.

A\ Chief Superintendent McDonald asked people to download the Hazards Near Me app to stay across all current warnings and information.

For assistance from the NSW SES during floods or storms, call 132 500. For life threatening situations call Triple 0.
