NSW SES ENCOURAGES FLOODED COMMUNITIES TO REMAIN VIGILANT

30/12/2022 05:04 PM

NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) continues to respond to prolonged flooding across the state.

In the last 24 hours, NSW SES has received 76 requests for assistance, 4 of those have been flood rescues.

Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns has said that people in flood prone areas should remain vigilant and heed warnings from NSW SES.

“We understand many communities across have experienced flooding for a long period of time.

“It is still important to heed warnings to evacuate when told to do so by the NSW SES.

“I want to also thank our volunteers on ground who have taken time away from family and work during the holiday periods to assist communities in need”

Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns has said it is important that people consider driving to the conditions of the road whilst travelling across the state.

“For travelers moving around the state, they should consider referring to LiveTraffic.com.au and local council website as many roads may still be impacted and damaged by floodwater.”

The main area of concern is Menindee, where record major flooding is predicted to exceed the 1976 record. The Menindee town gauge is predicted to reach major flooding later this evening at 10.7m due to water being released from Menindee Lakes. This is to manage water entering the Menindee Lake system from flooding entering the Darling River and flood plain below Wilcannia.

A Watch and Act warning was issued for low lying properties in and around Menindee on November 30. A community meeting was held at Menindee on Thursday 29 December 2022. An Emergency Warning, evacuate before 10am Friday, 30 December was issued on Thursday, 29 following door-knocking of residents which may be impacted by flooding.

Water NSW manages releases from Menindee Lakes. NSW SES is the combat agency for floods and will issue warnings to the community and respond to requests for assistance due to flooding.

NSW SES volunteers, with support from other agencies such as NSW Surf Life Saving and RFS, continue to support the Menindee community as they experience flooding.

There are currently 19 warnings across the state, 1 at Emergency Warning, 12 Watch and Act and 6 Advice.

For emergency help in floods and storms, call the NSW SES on 132 500. In life threatening situations, call Triple Zero (000) immediately.
