COMMUNITIES URGED TO PREPARE FOR WET WEEKEND

07/01/2022 04:07 PM

With the prospect of further widespread rainfall and isolated storms occurring across the state, NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES) is encouraging communities to make sure they are prepared.

The Bureau of Meteorology has advised showers and thunderstorms across the southern and eastern parts of the state are likely over the weekend, with some severe thunderstorms likely along the western slopes and adjacent ranges.

NSW SES Assistant Commissioner Sean Kearns said this type of weather is indicative of what can be expected during Storm Season.

“We have already seen hundreds of requests for assistance come through following severe storms in Wagga Wagga and Eden,” Mr Kearns said.

“The majority of those requests were for fallen trees and roof damage. Our volunteers in Eden also helped evacuate approximately 200 people from a caravan park due to flash flooding.

“There is the very likely chance we will see this type of weather continue right throughout the weekend.

“With many areas already saturated by a wet Storm Season, conditions are ripe for possible flash flooding and even renewed river rises,” Mr Kearns said.

Mr Kearns highlighted while NSW SES volunteers are ready to help when needed, it is important community members do what they can to prepare.

“For potential weather like this, that means knowing your flood risks. For instance, knowing the height of which your home, business and even your street could be affected by floodwater.

“Clearing gutters and downpipes, and also moving your car from underneath trees and powerlines can go a long way to helping reduce the chance of damage.

“Remember if you are on the roads, please drive to the conditions. If you come across floodwater, stop, turn around and find another way.
