With a La Niña climate condition declared by the Bureau of Meteorology today, communities across NSW need to be aware of the heightened risk of severe weather this Storm Season.

Commissioner of NSW SES, Carlene York, said communities right across the state can expect to see adverse weather conditions for months to come.

“With saturated catchments, heavy rain has already led to major flooding for many communities in western NSW and the Mid North Coast in recent weeks.

“This declaration brings an even further increased risk of riverine and flash flooding across NSW,” Commissioner York said.

Commissioner York said the Bureau’s announcement today is yet another reason for communities to be prepared for floods.

“Since Storm Season began (1 October 2021), our volunteers have responded to over 6715 requests for assistance from the community,” Commissioner York said.

“We have also been calling on everyone to make sure they are aware of their risks and prepared. If you aren’t yet prepared, today’s announcement adds to the urgency for you to do so now.

“Simple things like preparing an emergency evacuation kit can be incredibly useful and help you in the event you need to evacuate your home.

“Our website has a lot of useful information for anyone needing assistance to prepare or learn about their risks,” she said.
