Members parade rain or shine

NSW State Emergency Service members will respond to the rain in a different way to the usual on Saturday, March 6, as part of their participation in the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras.

Wearing NSW SES orange overall pants, umbrellas and specially-made t-shirts, members will perform a routine to Lady Gaga's "Rain On Me".

The parade usually takes place on Oxford Street, however this year it will be held at the Sydney Cricket Ground, to meet COVID-19-safe requirements.

There may be limits on numbers, but that won't stop 40 NSW SES members from celebrating and showing the service's commitment to diversity and inclusion as well as reflecting the diversity of the communities we serve.

Commissioner Carlene York said NSW SES has a long-term relationship in celebrating the Sydney Mardi Gras, taking part every year since 2007.

This year’s Mardi Gras theme of RISE is reflected in the NSW SES entry - #OrangePride RISES - where we recognise and celebrate the participation of LGBTIQ+ Allies members and the vital role they play within a Resilient Inclusive State Emergency Service (RISES).

"NSW SES strives to create a culture of inclusion where everyone feels safe, valued and respected for the diverse backgrounds, thinking and lived experiences they bring," Commissioner York said.

"I am proud to lead a service that is proactive in supporting, advocating for and building visibility and recognition for all LGBTIQ+ members."

NSW SES established the LGBTIQ+ Allies Network in 2017 to support LGBTIQ+ Allies members from metropolitan, regional, rural and remote locations.

"This network is proactive in creating platforms and opportunities across the LGBTQI+ Allies NSW SES membership," Commissioner York said.

"We will continue to stand up, stand out, stand with, and stand for LGBTIQ+ Allies members and for inclusive and resilient communities."
