Possible heavy rain and storms on the way for NSW Coast

NSW State Emergency Service (SES) is encouraging residents to prepare for thunderstorms and periods of heavy rain starting today and extending into the weekend.

Based on current predictions a coastal trough is likely to bring several days of very wet conditions including the potential for flash flooding, hail and damaging winds.

The system will affect the entire NSW coast with the Illawarra, Sydney and Hunter areas most affected.

NSW SES Incident Controller Tony Day said "This is a heads up to the community to get ready for a couple of wet and stormy days. The best way residents can help our volunteers is be aware of any severe weather warnings that might be issued and to stay out of flood water."

Mr Day added, "Our volunteers are on standby and people can request emergency flood and storm assistance on 132 500 or dial triple 000 if it’s a life threatening situation."

Before the weather deteriorates the NSW SES recommends taking a quick check around your home to ensure outdoor furniture is secure, overhanging branches are trimmed, gutters and down pipes are clear of debris.

NSW SES is also urging the public to plan their trips, drive to road conditions and to take care around areas with low lying causeways. Remember to never drive, walk, ride or play in flood waters.
