Meet Roofus, the new NSW SES Dog Rescue Mannequin

17/10/2019 01:50 PM

The NSW SES has added a new member to its mannequin family, a dog called Roofus. NSW SES Volunteers use dummies to practice rescue techniques so that no one is injured rescuing animals in real life.

“Many people evacuating from flood zones take small domestic animals and pets, such as dogs, with them.” says NSW SES Liverpool Unit Logistics Officer Ally Steen.

Roofus went through his first training exercise at the Manly Hydraulic Laboratory last month, where he was rescued from both a car and fast-flowing flood water.

“It's good to have a safe training method for our volunteers to learn more about rescuing small animals like dogs and other pets,” says Ally.

“We have two adults, one youth and a baby dummy at the Liverpool Unit, so Roofus has joined our little mannequin family. I’m sure that he will get a lot of use in the future."
