Volunteers from the Snowy River Unit will help to cut open eighty used cars at the Australasian Rescue Challenge (ARC) in Dubbo next week.

Rescue crews from Australia, New Zealand and Hong Kong will spend three days cutting ‘victims’ from the wrecks as part of the 2019 Australasian Rescue Challenge.

“This will be the second year that the Snowy River Unit has represented the NSW State Emergency Service in the Australasian Rescue Challenge,” says Unit Commander Richard Johns.

Twenty-one teams with 120 rescue and medical personnel will compete in three road crash rescue scenarios including entrapped, controlled and time critical as well as a CPR and trauma challenge.

NSW SES Snowy River Unit Commander Richard Johns says that the unit’s volunteers are always kept busy.

“The Snowy River Unit responds on average to roughly four requests for assistance every week, on top of calls for help that come in because of storms. We are lucky that our community is fairly resilient”

“We receive the most storm warnings in NSW, we respond to car accidents and help NSW Police with searches in the Kosciuszko National Park.”

“Our Unit is also qualified to do vertical and flood rescues.”

Six volunteers from the NSW SES Snowy River Unit will be competing in the Australasian Rescue Challenge this year. Together, they have 69 years of combined emergency service experience.
