Orange is the colour of gratitude for SES on WOW Day

They say a little bit of thanks goes a long way, and on Wednesday 23rd May, that thanks will go right around Australia as people wear orange to say thank you to State Emergency Service (SES) volunteers.

Orange may not be your colour and you may not have ever had to call upon the SES in times of disaster or emergency, but no doubt there will be someone you know that has sought help from these angels in orange.

Whether its tarping roofs in howling winds, rescuing people and animals from floods, attending serious road accidents, or searching for missing people, not an hour goes by where an SES volunteer is not helping someone in times of emergency.

The NSW State Emergency Service has over 9000 volunteers who give up their time to train for and respond to emergencies and natural disasters - 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They are the lifeblood of communities across NSW and indeed Australia, and last year responded to over 32,000 requests for assistance.

NRMA Insurance Partnerships and Programs manager, Jen Cobley said NSW SES volunteers are invaluable in helping NSW communities in times of storms, floods and other emergencies.

“We are proud to partner with the NSW SES to support volunteers and empower local communities to build resilience and protect themselves from severe weather. WOW Day is a fantastic initiative to recognise SES volunteers and we encourage everyone to wear something orange to show their appreciation,” said Ms Cobley.

NSW SES Commissioner Mark Smethurst is justifiably proud of his team.

“The mission of our Service is Saving Lives and Protecting Communities and we live and breathe that mission every day of the year” said Commissioner Smethurst.

“I encourage people to wear orange, even decorate their workplaces and schools, and really show how much our incredible volunteers are appreciated”

It’s a simple message through a simple gesture - wear something orange and say thanks!
