Sonia, Tom, Jaime and Peter all know the dangers of entering floodwater. They are all real people (not paid actors) who have shown tremendous bravery in sharing their story in the hope that people will not put theirs and other peoples’ lives at risk by entering floodwater.
The approach to the stories is based on the trends emerging from recent research (BNHCRC) that indicates:
- The majority of fatalities since 2000 (58%) have occurred within 20km of the victim’s home suggesting people are familiar with the road
- 79% of people who dies in floodwater are men with young men under 29 most at risk
- The majority of flood fatalities (45%) are attempting to cross a flooded road, causeway or bridge.
- Flood fatalities in 4WDS have dramatically increased over the last 15 years.
- Children and young adults make up a high proportion of passengers killed, while in a vehicle driven through floodwater
Check out their stories below and find out why they would never enter floodwater.
