Ever wondered what it’s like to be an SES volunteer, braving storms and floods, rescuing people and animals….

Or maybe running an operation, gathering situational awareness, helping with logistics, educating schools and community groups or working with the media to warn and inform?

The NSW State Emergency Service State Headquarters is throwing its doors open on Saturday 4th November from 11am till 2pm, so the community can come along and learn more about the Service.

The NSW SES is fondly known as the ‘Swiss Army Knife’ of emergency services, because of the variety of emergency response roles it undertakes on a daily basis across NSW. Many of these roles will be on display both inside and outside the newly opened state headquarters building located in Burelli Street, Wollongong.

Volunteers will be undertaking an array of demonstrations including a road crash rescue using the ‘jaws of life’ and a vertical rescue response down the side of the building. Animal lovers will be able to join in to help rescue SESil, the life size model horse, as part of the Large Animal Rescue demonstration and meet Alfie and Bear at the Animals in Emergencies stand.

There will be tours of the State Operations Centre, Visitor Experience and Media centre, and the Volunteering Reimagined team will be on hand to talk about flexible, spontaneous and corporate volunteering options that can fit your lifestyle and interests.

There will be a flotilla of flood rescue boats and vehicles on display, plus the latest in rescue and communications equipment to check out. Plus face painting, hands on activities, games, giveaways and more!

Rotary will be putting on a sausage sizzle and the Brewing Up A Storm Café will also be open.

NSW SES State Headquarters is located at 93-99 Burelli Street, Wollongong, just a 2 minute walk from Wollongong Station.
