Flood waters ease in northern NSW but hazards still present

02/04/2017 04:12 AM

Floodwaters around Lismore and surrounding communities are starting to ease, however Evacuation Orders remain in place for many communities in the Northern Rivers region. The NSW SES is urging residents to stay out of these areas because large amounts of debris and other hazardous material has been washed up by the floodwaters. Once these areas are deemed safe, the NSW SES will issue ‘All Clear’ notices and residents will be able to return.

The NSW SES is continuing to manage calls for help from the community in the state’s north, responding to 473 flood rescues and 2524 flood and storm jobs since Wednesday.

Evacuation Orders and flood safety advice remain in place for the following communities:

  • South Murwillumbah, Condong and Tumbulgum
  • Chinderah, Kingscliff, Fingal Head and Bilambil
  • Lismore CBD, and North and South Lismore
  • Tweed Heads South, Tweed Heads West, Tweed Heads
  • Murwillumbah CBD and East
  • Kyogle
  • Billinudgel
  • Ocean Shores
  • New Brighton
  • Seagulls Estate and Banora
  • Coraki

Most rivers in the region have reached their peak but NSW SES will continue to monitor river levels. Residents are being asked to be vigilant and to stay clear of rivers, creeks and streams and to avoid sightseeing as it can hinder the efforts of emergency services.

As floodwaters slowly begin to recede, recovery efforts will be able to take place.
