Tim Keown

Albury Unit

'I grew up in a rural area where everyone in the community had to help each other, especially in hard times. '

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role within NSW SES?

I'm currently doing the community engagement role in Albury meaning I am responsible for media, social media, community events and interactions with the community to help them become resilient and aware. I also assist communities as a storm damage team member and chainsaw operator.

Why did you join NSW SES? Anything that was deciding factor for you?

I grew up in a rural area where everyone in the community helps each other, especially in hard times. With that in mind I joined NSW SES in Marrickville in my early 20s. I had a few years off when moving around but all up have been with NSW SES over 16 years.

What is your favourite part about being a member of the NSW State Emergency Service?

I enjoy getting out and helping the public when they need it most. Being able to give so little of myself but be able to make such a big difference for the people we help.

What are the various skills you have learnt along the way?

Team work, I have a high level of trust in our team. Working with floodboats, swiftwater rescue, chainsaw operation. There's so much to learn in NSW SES.

What advice would you give to others that are thinking to join?

Sometimes it all seems slow and stagnate, people often leave because it's so quiet. Stick it out! It is rewarding, it is fun, when it gets busy you'll wish it hadn't and you will meet some incredible people all over NSW and on occasion in other states as well.
