The Rock Unit

I have always been fascinated with helping people, while also gaining extensive skills, experience and a second family.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role within NSW SES?

I’ve grown up with an emergency services background. I have always been fascinated with helping people, while also gaining extensive skills, experience and a second family. I haven’t been as involved as I would’ve liked within the last few months due to work, however, I’m working towards my Road Crash Rescue Operator Certificate, and I look forward to becoming an active operator within my unit.

Why did you join NSW SES?

Emergency services is in my blood. I initially started with RFS and thought the NSW SES offered so many specialist skills that would couple well with my existing skills. I also enjoy being part of my local community, assisting those in need and helping in times of crisis.

What is your favourite part about being a member of the NSW SES?

The experiences and big family that comes with it! There are so many opportunities I’ve been lucky enough to experience thanks to NSW SES. Also, being able to experience all that I have with the great mates I’ve made, while helping my community at the same time, makes it even more worthwhile!

What are the various skills you have learnt along the way?

I learn something new and interesting every time I’m with the unit. I’ve specifically enjoyed learning to use hydraulic rescue gear and I also enjoy practising with the roof kits to assist with storm and water damage.

What advice would you give to others that are thinking to join?

Just do it  you might surprise yourself and you won’t regret it! It’s also a great way to give back to your local community.
