Liverpool Unit

I joined NSW SES through my science tutor – he spoke about the service and what he did.... Now, more than five years on, I never looked back.

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role within NSW SES?

I am a field team member with the NSW SES Liverpool Unit. I am trained in Storm and Water Damage Operations, Chainsaw and Swiftwater Rescue. My other duties include helping maintaining storm response/flood rescue equipment and attending requests for assistance whether it’s for the community or other emergency services agencies like Fire and Rescue, NSW RFS, NSW ambulance or NSW Police. When I am not working with NSW SES, I am a university student.

Why did you join NSW SES?

I joined NSW SES through my science tutor – he spoke about the service and what he did.

What my science tutor said about the service got me thinking about enquiring about it. Now, more than five years on, I never looked back.

What is your favourite part about being a member of NSW State Emergency Service?

My favourite part about the service is the feeling of helping the community where there is a flood event or a tree down blocking a road/highway and just being there, reassuring members of the community that you can help. To me that what makes NSW SES an amazing service.

What are the various skills you have learnt along the way?

Since joining the service, I have been trained in various courses like Storm and Water Damage Operations, Chainsaw, and Land Search. But the main course that I had to train for was Flood Rescue because, before joining the service, I didn’t know how to swim. I booked swim classes to learn to swim and after a year of training, I returned to do the swim test to get into the Flood Rescue Course and successfully passed.

What advice would you give to others that are thinking to join?

My advice for others is just do it. There is no harm in looking and having a go. I did not think twice of joining and I am still here after more than five years. It is a rewarding feeling that you don’t get anywhere else, knowing that you helped a community through tough times and at the same time you make great friends.

Background about photo
I was travelling in a convoy and came across this echidna, everything was burnt except this cute echidna during the bushfires earlier in the year.
I guess we as a team, rescued it from being ran over.

Background about photo
Despite the destruction of bushfires earlier this year, this a more of a happier moment to enjoy.
Also, this horse really liked me and me I was just horsing around (pun intended).
