Auburn Unit

'The mateship, teamwork and work culture are all outstanding in my unit. People are definitely my favourite part of joining the SES.'

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role within NSW SES?

I am a member of the Storm and Flood Damage Team at the Auburn SES Unit. I am trained in both storm preparation and storm response operations, this includes raising awareness of storm risks among the local community, maintaining storm response equipment and of course attending requests for assistance with other teammates.

I am also trained in other fields, including:

  • chainsaw
  • rescue operation
  • radio communication

Outside of the NSW SES, I am a university student.

Why did you join NSW SES? Anything that was deciding factor for you?

I joined the NSW SES cadet program at the high school in 2012, the cadet program allows me to gain more insight on what the NSW SES does for the community and it was also a great opportunity for me to learn more about different roles in an SES unit. After I graduated from high school, I joined the Auburn SES Unit and become an adult member since.

What is your favourite part about being a member of the NSW State Emergency Service?

NSW SES for me is more than just a volunteering experience, it is very much a family. I have known a lot of friends throughout my time in the SES, and they are more than just colleagues; we hang out outside of the training too.

The mateship, teamwork and work culture are all outstanding in my unit. People are definitely my favourite part of joining the SES.

What are the various skills you have learnt along the way?

Other than the skills mentioned in the above section, I am currently looking to learn more about administration fields such as incident control and planning.

If you are looking for something meaningful and fun to do, meeting new friends and willing to give out just a couple hours per week, then look no further, NSW SES is the volunteering experience you are seeking for.
