Cassandra Cowell

Orange City Unit

"Previously being a model and graphic designer, I'm an example of people volunteering from all walks of life."

Tell us a bit about yourself and your role within NSW SES?

Although I don't mind doing the tree and flood jobs, I do love the Media side of things, such as social media, radio interviews, media releases, filming press conferences live to Facebook and Periscope etc.

Why did you join NSW SES? Anything that was deciding factor for you?

There was a large search for a family friend who had been abducted and murdered. I wanted to help. I saw on the TV news, that NSW SES volunteers were searching for her body. That was when I knew I wanted to join NSW SES.

What is your favourite part about being a member of the NSW State Emergency Service?

Everybody has each others back. Like a little family and the Head Quarters is sometimes a second home for us. I also like liaising with clients, meeting them, reassuring them, being positive and helping them out with photos for insurance.

What are the various skills you have learnt along the way?

  1. Teamwork
  2. Assessing Safety and hazards
  3. Drive Operational Vehicles
  4. Participate in a Rescue Operation
  5. Urban search and rescue
  6. Land search
  7. Media

What advice would you give to others that are thinking to join?

Be safe at all times. Follow direction and use initiative!

You will make friends and be part of something bigger than just yourself, a sense of belonging helping your community.
