Community Education

Community education is an important function of the SES. Having a community that are prepared for floods and storms or other emergencies, can assist in reducing the loss of property, stock and even lives. Ultimately, community education builds resilience to these events within communities.

Community education in the SES can take many forms. Below are some of the roles which can be incorporated as community education:

  • Facilitating unit members to become involved in proactive education events in your unit area
  • Developing displays and demonstrations for events
  • Developing local resources
  • Networking with local stakeholders and community around community education issues
  • Preparing talks for presentations
  • Delivering talks
  • Talking to local schools and other community groups
  • Engaging with local people (residents, business owners, land owners) about their flood and storm risk
  • Training and assessing other Community Education Officers (CEdOs) within your region or in other regions of the SES
  • Identifying local issues, target groups and risk areas to develop relevant engagement strategies for education
