Uneasy bedfellows: Emergency managers and the media

Keys, C. (1993) The Macedon Digest, 8 (2) 12-14

Effective liaison and interaction between agencies is central to modern emergency management, which explains why DISPLAN arrangements in Australia specify networks of inter-organisational mutual support mechanisms for dealing with disasters. Hostilities between agencies can develop, of course, and become institutionalised - at which point a potential exists for serious problems to develop for disaster management itself. Equally, there may be difficulties in relationships between emergency managers on the one hand and people and organisations outside the emergency field on the other. One such area of potential discord is the relationship between emergency managers and the media.
