Moderate Flooding Affects Bellinger Valley5 September 2008, 8:03pmModerate flooding has isolated 500 people in the upper Bellinger Valley and closed the Waterfall Way.
The Bureau of Meteorology renewed the Minor to Moderate Flood Warning for the Bellinger River at 7:26pm Friday. As at 8:15pm Friday moderate flooding was affecting Thora with the river having peaked at 4.56 metres at around 6pm. This has resulted in the isolation of some 500 people in the upper Bellinger Valley upstream of Thora due to the closure of low-lying river crossings. This isolation is likely to continue overnight. The SES is monitoring the welfare of people in the upper Bellinger Valley and is ready to provide emergency assistance if required. In Bellingen, the Bellinger River has peaked close to 6.2 metres around 8pm with moderate flooding. This has resulted in the closure of the Waterfall Way between the Pacific Highway and Bellingen and Bellingen and Dorrigo. This will be reassessed by the RTA Saturday morning. Those intending to use the Waterfall Way should call the RTA on 131 700 for up to date roads information. SES volunteers from the Coffs Harbour Unit are on standby to assist in the movement of vans from a park at Repton on the lower Bellinger River. For emergency assistance in floods and storms, call the SES on 132 500. |
