Weather Continues on North Coast of NSW

5 September 2008, 8:04am

A low developing off the far north coast of NSW is expected to deepen and move south along the north coast today. A renewed Minor Flood Warning has also been issued for the Bellinger River at Thora.

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a renewed Minor Flood Warning for the Bellinger River at Thora this morning. An average of 64 millimetres of rain has fallen over the Bellinger catchment during the past 24 hours to 6 am today with a maximum of 117 millimetres recorded at Dorrigo. Further rain is forecast for the next 12 hours.

This rain is expected to cause minor flooding at Thora later this morning. At this stage it is not possible to predict the flood peak because of uncertainty over how much more rain will fall.

River Height Predictions:

Thora- Reach minor flood level (3.2 metres) around noon today 05/09/2008

The predicted three metre minor flood level at Thora means that low lying bridges such as Hobart's in Thora may be affected. This isolates residents upstream of the bridge until waters recede back below the minor flood height of 3.0 metres.

In Bellingen, some low lying farm land down stream from town may be affected. Farmers in the area close to rivers and creeks are urged to:

  • Monitor livestock, pumps and farm equipment
  • Ensure feed and chemicals are raised or moved to higher ground

 During floods:

  • Never drive, ride or walk through floodwater, it may be deeper or faster flowing than you realise
  • Keep in contact with your neighbours
  • Listen to your local radio station for updates, information and advice
  • For emergency assistance during floods and storms call the SES on 132 500, for life-threatening emergencies call 000

A Severe Weather Warning is current for people on the Mid-North coast for flash flooding and damaging winds. Some localised heavy rainfall is possible. Rain should contract south during the day. Strong to gale force winds are expected with gusts in excess of 90km/h along the coastal fringe of the Mid-North coast.

The SES advises:

  • Stay clear of fallen trees, power lines and damaged buildings
  • Stay indoors and away from windows
  • Secure loose items from around your yard and balcony
  • Stay clear of creeks, drains and causeways

The State Emergency Service is monitoring the situation.
