Volunteer members of the Moama and Mathoura SES Units spent the day at the Kerrabee Sound Shell in Moama talking to residents about the need for local volunteers as part of National Volunteers Week.

Although a small amount of locals came along for a free BBQ lunch and to talk to local volunteers about volunteering for their local SES unit, a large amount of press supported the day. This visibility in the local community for the SES unit will hopefully garner some new recruits. Already two people have signed up to help their local community in times of floods and/or storms.

SES volunteers in these areas not only assist their coommunities through operational activities which include responding to requests for assistance from local residents for damage due to floods and storms, there is also a lot of 'behind the scenes' work that needs to be done. Volunteers can assist in the administration side of an operation, help out with unit accounts, develop local community education and media strategies and assist in local training.

Volunteers from these areas have also been involved in state-wide operations with members travelling to the Hunter region last June and to Blacktown in the west of Sydney in December to assist with storm responses in these areas.

Volunteering in regional areas such as these can also help with social connection. Members from both of these SES units have formed lasting and strong friendships with other SES members. For communities in these areas where hardship on the land is a day-to-day struggle, these friendships can form a great support network

There are now plans to continue the visibility of the SES in these areas including local market days, more media articles and possible community meetings and school visits. For the locals, keep an eye out for more opportunities to talk to your local SES volunteers and remember, there is a vast diversity of volunteering roles that the SES can offer you, complete with nationally recognised training, support and the opportunity for you to gain skills, make life-long friendships and help to make your community more resilient to disasters such as floods and storms.

Thanks to all the local volunteers who assisted with the recruitment day.
