The NSW SES has won a Highly Commended at the Australian Safer Communities Awards conducted in Canberra on Thursday 1 December.
The awards, conducted by Emergency Management Australia, were presented by Federal Attorney-General Philip Ruddock in a ceremony conducted at Federal Parliament House.
The SES won their award in the State / Federal Pre-disaster category. The award was for the SES' Business FloodSafe Program. This innovative program was trialled in the towns of Wagga Wagga and Kempsey. The program is designed to increase business awareness of and preparedness for flooding and to have a business flood plan that can be easily incorporated into a businesses existing business continuity plan.
Receiving the award were SES volunteers May Gill and Phil Reid and Public Relations Officer Phil Campbell. All paid tribute to Senior Flood Planner Andrew Gissing who coordinated the project but was unable to attend.
The kit will be progressively rolled out to flood prone businesses in the next few years. The kit is available online.
