Severe weather and strong winds cause damage
10 August 2012, 2:23PM AET
A Severe Weather Warning is in place for damaging surf for people in the Metropolitan, South Coast, Illawarra, Northern Rivers, Hunter and Mid North Coast forecast districts.
There have already been wind gusts recorded up to 100 km/hour in the coastal areas of Sydney, Illawarra and the south coast.
The NSW SES has received over 200 requests for assistance, mainly for trees down in the Sydney Northern, Sydney Southern and Illawarra South Coast Region.
“While we have only received 200 requests for assistance, it is difficult to pick exactly how much damage could be caused by these types of wind gusts. We have our crews out in the affected areas and will continue to respond for as long as we are needed.” Assistant Commissioner Keith FitzGerald said.
The weather is expected to remain for the afternoon and into the evening.
Residents are advised to secure any loose items around the home and bring children and pets indoors.
Motorists should drive to the conditions of the day and not park cars under trees and if you come across downed power lines, treat them as if they are live and avoid the area.
