Saturday Afternoon Flood and Storm Update

11 February 2012, 5:45PM AET

The NSW SES has received over 225 calls for help today following severe storms. The storms affected the Blue Mountains, western Sydney, the Central Coast (especially Wyong) and the Mid-north Coast (especially Port Macquarie and Telegraph Point).

The damage has generally been minor with leaking roofs, properties threatened by flash flooding and trees and branches down. Some roof damage has been reported. There has also been reports of more significant damage at Telegraph Point some 20km north of Port Macquarie where a storm brought down large trees causing many blocked roads and powerlines down as well as some property damage. A flood rescue activation occured at Hazelbrook with a family home threatened by flash flooding. Water subsided quickly after the storm cleared and all are safe and well.

NSW SES crews of volunteers continue to be active in many areas.

More storms are likely Sunday and the NSW SES asks peole to be prepared for possible further storms by keeping gutters clear, checking your roof is in good repair, clearing away or securing loose items in yards and balconies and trimming away overhanging trees and branches were safe to do so.

In the rest of the state isolations now total 6,900. The worst affected area is Lightning Ridge where 3,300 are cut off as well as Collarenebri (500) and Mungindi (700). Access has been restored to Wee Waa.

Other towns such as Walgett, Goodooga and Brewarrina are likely to become isolated and residents have been asked to stock up on supplies.

If you require help call the NSW SES on 132 500 or 000 if it is a life-threatening emergency.
