Flood Update Saturday Afternoon

4 February 2012, 6:00PM AET

For the NSW SES the focus of flood response operations remains within the North West of the state, with the situation on the Mid-north Coast improving significantly.

All rivers on the Mid-north Coast have fallen below the minor flood height. With the Bellinger River at Thora having fallen below Minor flood height the communities of Darkwood and Thora are no longer isolated. This affects some 300 people. There are only some 600 people now isolated on the Mid-north Coast.

Statewide there remain some 16,500 isolated people. There are 1680 people still subject to an evacuation order who are not yet able to return to their homes.

Some isolations are still current in Bellbrook, Wittitrin, Nulla Nulla Creek and Maria Rivers. There are also some isolations on the Nymboida River. Other isolations are around Moree, the Namoi valley and the far west of the State at Goodooga and Tilpa.

The Mehi River at Moree is falling and parts of the community in North Moree previously subject to an Evacuation Order were issued an ‘All Clear’ via media and Emergency Alert this afternoon. This partial all clear was released once the road surface and Bridge at the point of access had been inspected by the Moree Plains Council.

Moree remains isolated.

Evacuation Orders remain in place for Pallamallawa (pop.600) and Biniguy (pop.80), Gwydirfield, Bendygleet and Yarraman.

An Evacuation Warning for Wee Waa (pop.2300) was rescinded late this afternoon with the townsfolk no longer under threat of evacuation. The township is currently isolated and will remain so until around Wednesday.

Flood Waters in the township of Barraba have receded and the SES issued an ‘All Clear’ for Barraba this morning.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Michael Gallacher has announced 6 additional Natural Disaster Declarations including the Local Government Areas of Tenterfield, Greater Taree, Moree, Narrabri, Gwydir and Gunnedah.

Today Requests for Assistance (RFAs) generally relate to Air Support, Food and Medical Re-Supply. Since this morning there have been 103 RFAs. There have been a total of 46 flood rescues since the start of this Event on 31/1/12.

There are 17 rotary wing and 1 fixed wing aircraft deployed across flood-affected areas.

The NSW SES has continued to undertake resupply of isolated properties, principally by helicopter in the State's north west. There have also been some medical evacuations including a person with a suspected spider bite an a person with chest pains.

The NSW SES has also helped transport essential medical supplies to local isolatated hospitals and chemists. Other missions have rescued people on isolated properties, resupply of essential items and reconnaissance.
