Flood Update Sunday
29 January 2012, 1:30PM AET
According to the Bureau of Meteorology (BoM), today will be partly cloudy in the far southeast. Rain is falling in the north and increasing and extending southwards during the day with local heavy falls over parts of northern inland. The chance of thunderstorms exists in the far north west.
The BoM have issued a Flood Watch forpossible minor flooding to develop on the Nambucca River on the Mid-North Coast and minor flooding on the Murrumbidgee River in the State's south. Details are at www.bom.gov.au/nsw People living and working along these rivers should lift pumps and relocate livestock and equipment to higher ground.
Record heavy rain fell overnight in the upper reaches of the Paroo River. This will likely result in major flooding at Willara Crossing and Wanaaring similar to that experienced in 2010.Rural property owners in the area should ensure they lift pumps and relocate livestock and equipment to higher ground. If isolation is likely they should stock up on food, fuel, medicine and other essential items before roads close. If resupply is required call the NSW SES on 132 500.
On the North and Mid-North Coasts, flooding continues. There remain numerous road closures and people requiring up to date rioad information should call the RTA on 132 701 or visit www.rta.nsw.gov.au
There are some 2,000 isolated persons but this number is falling as rain eased overnight allowing falls in rivers. The areas affected are parts of the upper Macleay, Bellinger, Brunswick, Tweed and areas along the Clarence River. Further heavy rain later today may hold up stream heights or cause further rises (notably on the Nambucca for whih a Flood Watch is current).
At Goodooga the Bokhara River has isolated the largely indigenous community of 300. The SES has undertaken a reconnaissance flight to the area today to ascertain the communities' needs. Assistance will be provided in consultation with the community as required.
The NSW SES has 11 helicopters and additional volunteers and staff in the affected areas to provide a boost to local resources and assist affected communities in resupply, rescue and other assistance such as temporary repairs to damaged property. Should you require assistance call the NSW SES on 132 500 or 000 if it is a life threatening emergency.
The NSW SES is also asking people driving home from holidays to not enter any floodwater that they encounter. Remember, if it's flooded - forget it.
