SES crews respond to calls after heavy rain overnight

21 February 2012, 9:21AM AET

Heavy rain has affected parts of metropolitan Sydney with some reports of localised flash flooding around the northern beaches, however minimal damage has been reported. Around 16 jobs were attended to in this area in Newport, Avalon and Church Point where flash flooding was threatening some homes.

Across the New South Wales, approximately 160 requests for assistance were received since 2pm yesterday, with the majority of those jobs around Sydney for trees down as well as leaking and damaged roofs.

A flood rescue was carried out at Bakers Creek near Gloucester on the Mid North Coast yesterday evening where two men on a tractor became trapped by floodwater between two causeways. SES crews quickly responded to the scene and were able to get the men out safely.

NSW SES Commissioner, Murray Kear is urging people to be StormSafe .

“Given we are well into the storm season it’s important for people to prepare their homes for severe weather. Simple tasks like cleaning out your gutters and downpipes can prevent damage to homes as has been experienced in some properties in Sydney overnight,” Commissioner Kear said.

“The NSW SES has responded to 13 flood rescues in the past 48 hours so it’s a timely reminder for people of how dangerous flash flooding can be. If you are driving in inclement weather drive to the conditions and if you come across a flooded road think again about driving through it. Remember, never drive ride or walk through floodwater,” he added.

If you have suffered damage to your property overnight as a result of the heavy rain please call the NSW SES on 132 500.

Dial 000 in a life threatening emergency.
