Flood Preparation and Response


Flood preparation and response is one of the core duties of the SES.

 

Floods happen in NSW. Some of them have been devastating. The SES responds in the areas of preparation and response to flood events. SES volunteers can be involved in flood preparation and response through:

 

Flood Preparation

  • Working with their local community to raise awareness of flood risks and to create resilient communities through promoting appropriate actions for preparedness and response to flood events
  • Working with the media to promote flood awareness and safety
  • Developing local community education programs and activities on flood safety
  • Organising public displays on flood awareness
  • Delivering or organising presentations and talks to local community members on flood awareness
  • Assisting with the development of local education resources
  • Assisting with local flood planning
  • Maintaining flood response equipment

Flood Response

  • Assist in operations by taking requests for assistance
  • Monitor local river heights and report back
  • Rescue trapped or isolated people
  • Resupply of essential items to isolated people
  • Assist in evacuations if required through doorknocks and information delivery
  • Assisting communities in building temporary levees and flood mitigation - including sandbagging
  • Assist in stock relocation and rescuing trapped or isolated livestock
