Roles of the SES: Air Observation

Air observers in training Air observers in training

SES volunteers may be called upon to conduct aerial searches.

The SES is sometimes asked by Australian Search and Rescue (AUSaR), who are part of the Australian Maritime Service Authority, to assist in aerial searches for missing persons, vehicles or aircraft.

These searches are conducted from helicopters or fixed wing aircraft. These searches may be either over land or water.

The SES has trained volunteers located across the state to do ir observation. The training they undertake teaches them how to safely approach and leave helicopters and fixed wing aircraft and how to effectively search for objects from those aircraft.
