Following a few simple steps can make you more prepared for storms:
CLEAN YOUR GUTTERS AND DOWNPIPES OF ANY DEBRIS.
Run-off from rain can back-up under the eaves and into your ceiling which can cause major damage.
TRIM OVERHANGING BRANCHES.
If safe and you have permission from your Local Council, trim any overhanging or dangerous limbs from trees that are growing around your property. These can cause major damage to buildings if they fall and can also block access to your property, close roads and damage power lines. Seek permission from your Council and also, where power lines are involved, seek assistance from the electricity company.
KEEP YOUR YARD AND/OR BALCONY FREE FROM LOOSE ITEMS.
Loose items around your yard or balcony can become dangerous missiles in high winds. Clean away any items that could be blown around. These include securing light-weight garden furniture, toys and pet accessories when a storm is forecast.
MAKE SURE YOUR ROOF IS IN GOOD REPAIR.
Making sure that your roofing material is secure and in good condition will assist in keeping water from getting into your building.
EMERGENCY NUMBERS.
Keep a list of emergency numbers on your fridge or inside a cupboard door. These will come in handy for any emergencies that may occur.
You can also prepare a Family Emergency Kit.
