Major Flooding at Coffs Harbour

6 November 2009, 11:31pm

SES volunteers continue to respond to flood and severe weather events across the north coast of NSW with Coffs Harbour being the main area where requests for assistance have come from.

The Bureau of Meteorology issued a Major Flood Warning for Coffs Creek at Coffs Harbour with the creek expected to have exceeded major flood level at eleven pm Friday November 6th.

other Flood Warnings are current for the Bellinger Valley (Moderate), Orara River (Moderate) and the Nambucca River (Moderate). A Severe Weather Warning for people in the Northern Rivers and Mid-North Coast is also current. these warnings change over time so keep updated by visiting the Bureau website and by listening to your local radio station.

The SES advises:

  • Residents and businesses along streams and creeks should take immediate precautions to protect life and property
  • Never drive, walk or ride through flood water - this is the main cause of death during floods as water may be deeper or faster flowing and may contain
    hidden snags or debris
  • keep listening to your local radio station for information, updates and advice
  • If you are caught in your home during a flash flood, shelter in the highest place
  • Keep a close watch on the situation, stay tuned to local radio or TV, alert your neighbours (particularly elderly), check pets and livestock and reconsider
    travel plans
  • Follow the advice of emergency services
  • Stay clear of fallen trees and powerlines as well as creeks, drains, causeways, gutters and streams
  • If flood waters rise around your car, get out and move to higher ground if it is safe to do so

For emergency assistance call the SES on telephone number 132 500. In life threatening emergencies, call 000 immediately.
