Number Isolated by Floods Tops 500

27 October 2009, 1:07pm

Floodwaters have closed Moodys Bridge on the Kalang River, isolating some 500 people, with a further 80 isolated on the Nambucca River.

Torrential rain overnight caused by a deep low pressure trough over northern New South Wales has resulted in flooding on the Orara, Bellinger and Nambucca Rivers. In the past few hours rain has increased resulting in renewed river rises on the Orara and Bellinger Rivers.

The latest flood warnings are available HERE.

On the Kalang River near Bellingen Moodys Bridge has closed resulting in the isolation of some 500 people. These people are well prepared and the SES will closely monitor their welfare and provide assistance if required. On the Nambucca River the closure of Lanes Bridge has isolated a further 80 people. In both cases isolation is expected to be relatively short lived with access likely to be restored later today or tomorrow morning depending upon the amount of further rainfall.

The SES warns that you do not drive, ride or walk through flood waters as water can be deeper or faster flowing than you think and contain hidden snags and debris. Do not go sight-seeing and follow the instructions of the emergency services.

For emergency assistance in floods and storms call 132 500. In a life threatening emergency call 000 immediately.
