Sunday Storms Cause Flash Flooding

26 October 2009, 8:32am

The SES has received 81 requests for assistance over the past 24 hours with the majority of requests from flash flooding caused by storms in Sydney on Sunday afternoon.

The State Emergency Service has received 81 requests for assistance since noon Sunday. Most of these requests have been from the Sydney Metropolitan area, notably from the lower north shore and the inner west. Slow moving thunderstorms in these areas resulted in rain of up 65mm falling in a few hours, causing flash flooding, leaking roofs and overflowing guttering.

Storms also affected other areas of the state later in the day, particularly around Coffs Harbour where some localised flash flooding was also reported. Overnight conditions have abated, with just 11 requests for assistance state-wide.

The SES recommends that gutters and drains be cleared of leaves and other debris and roofs kept in good repair to assist rainwater to get away during heavy rain. For further information on preparing for floods, visit the StormSafe section of the SES website.
