Six Tips for Summer Storm Preparedness

21 October 2009, 1:08pm

With the summer storm season now underway, the SES is asking households and businesses to prepare.

Storms in New South Wales cause an average of $217 million damage to property each year. This makes storms the most costly natural disaster to affect the state. Unlike bushfires and floods, all businesses and households may experience damage caused by severe storms.

The SES recommends that households and businesses prepare for storms by undertaking the following:

1. Keep your yard free from clutter - as unsecured items such as plastic garden furniture, trampolines and children's toys can become airbourne in the strong winds caused by a storm and become a safety hazard or cause damage to buildings.

2. Trim overhanging branches - as these can break and fall on vehicles or buildings, or block roads and driveways. Trimming branches may be hazardous especially if there are nearby powerlines or they are difficult to reach, and removing or lopping trees may require council permission. If you are uncertain about your ability to remove a branch safely, call in a professional contractor and check with your council if trees or branches may be lopped or removed before commencing.

3. Make sure your roof is in good repair - as a roof in condition can better resist the strong winds, hail and torrential winds of most severe storms.

4. Clean your gutters and downpipes regularly - as if these fill quickly with hail and water they can cause water to flow into the roof cavity and damage ceilings and walls.

5. Prepare yourself and assemble an emergency kit - this should include at least a first aid kit, radio, torch, batteries and emergency phone numbers.

6. Listen to your local radio station when storm warnings are broadcast - your local TV station may also provide updates and advice.

For emergency assistance in floods and storms, call the SES on 132 500. In a life threatening emergency call 000 immediately.
